Mountcutting workshops - develop your skills

Included with every Longridge mountcutter is an instruction leaflet that explains in detail exactly how to cut a simple mount. A CD suitable for running on a Windows or AppleMac computer complements the leaflet and shows a mountcutter being used. We have found that people who have never cut a mount before will be able to cut a professional quality mount with just a little practice and careful attention to the instructions.

Many people will want to take the art of mountcutting further though and experiment with double mounts and multiple apertures. As with every craft, there are also tips and tricks of the trade that can only be learned from an expert. So we at Longridge are delighted to recommend the workshops run by Larry StCroix MA (RCA) Cert Ed. Larry runs frequent workshops for artists and photographers as well as tailor made workshops for individuals and groups of friends, all using Longridge products and accessories.

Let your imagination fly - changing the colour of the mountboard and the shape of the mount has huge impact on how the finished artwork looks - and a workshop is the ideal opportunity to try out new ideas with colour and shape.

Workshops can be for one or more people and the cost will dependent upon needs, venue and locality, but will generally include the supply of mountboard, other materials being charged at cost as required.

Each workshop is designed around the needs of the particular students attending but a typical workshop will be a full day and generally include
  • Introduction to types of mountboard and mount materials
  • Introduction to the Longridge mount cutting system, tools and accessories.
  • Measuring & estimating.
  • Demonstrations of preparing -
    • Single aperture mount
    • Double aperture mount
    • Multi-aperture mount
    • Mount with title aperture
    • Creative cutting and applications
    • Use of surplus mountboard for making greeting cards.
  • Mounting the art work and/or photograph.
  • All participants will prepare and construct all types of mounts as listed above and mount at least one piece of art work and/or photograph.
  • A brief introduction to picture framing including a demonstration of fitting and fixing the mounted item.
Those who attend the workshop will use the Longridge system (either one they have already purchased or one that is provided during the workshop). There will also be an opportunity to purchase the recommended mount cutting system (plus accessories) as demonstrated and used throughout the workshop.

Mount cutting tuition can also be combined with other related workshops such as picture framing and photography. The photography tuition will be presented by Steve Fussell who runs his own studio set in beautiful South Hams countryside and is where Steve works on his own photographic images as well as those taken professionally for clients. For example a weekend course could include all three disciplines, or perhaps mount cutting with photography, or mount cutting and picture framing. These workshops would be run at Steve's studio or other locations as and when necessary. Flexibility and meeting your needs is our aim.
